The passenger terminal is a modern four-storey building with complete infrastructure, designed in line with contemporary architectural trends. The terminal has three floors above ground and underground floor. The capacity of the building is 38,500 cubic metres. It has 7,260 square metres of usable area. The estimated handling capacity of the terminal is 1.000.000 passengers per year.
The entire building has been designed with functionality and easy movement in mind. This is highly appreciated by the passengers, as it facilitates speedy and efficient personal and luggage checks, convenient and quick baggage handling, provides 468 guarded car parking spaces, and so on. The terminal has been designed for the needs of the disabled. In 2004, the work has started on the adaptation of the passenger terminal to the requirements imposed by the Schengen Treaty on transboundary traffic. As a result, the terminal will be fully prepared for handling air traffic within the EU as well as to and from non-member states.
The passenger terminal and airport are under a 24-hour surveillance by the Security and Technical Control Centre, which operates with the following systems:
- CONRAC departures information system, - DANPOLTHERM air - conditioning system, - HONEYWELL fire - fighting system, - GALLET baggage handling system, - OTIS lifts and escalators system.
The passenger terminal of the Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport offers the travellers a very broad range of services and sales outlets, thereby meeting the high expectations of carriers and their passengers as well as other airport users.
AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL CENTRE Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport is controlled from a flight control tower. The airport also has a separate aircraft approach guidance system.
The control tower is responsible for the safety of airplanes within the airport-controlled zone. Its staff directs the movement of all vehicles on the taxi and runways, provides weather information to pilots, such as wind speed and direction, air temperature, cloud type and visibility, and so on. The staff also keeps in touch with all the airport's service providers. The tower officers use the most technically advanced equipment in their daily work. The tower is equipped with radio telecommunications systems, radio lines, cable connections and an ATIS computer system. In the event of main direction 2.9 landings, the Instrument Landing System (ILS) is used: a radio direction beacon, a glide-path radio beacon and radio markers. Two radio non-direction beacon systems (NDB) constitute additional navigation equipment.
To ensure safety of the computerised airport, all equipment on the ground is duplicated and is powered by several reserve power sources.
Before an aircraft enters the ATCC airspace, its location is monitored by the regional radar control system. This monitoring applies to all aeroplanes approaching the airport over the area of northern Poland. They are monitored by a GEC Marconi Radar installed on a 40 metre tall tower. It consists of a primary radar with approx. 130 km range, a secondary radar with approx. 450 km range. A modern meteorological radar, operating within the POLRAD system, provides meteorological coverage for the airport. The radar ensures spatial and temporal continuity of monitoring with respect to dangerous meteorological phenomena: precipitation, thunderstorms and gales within a 100-250 km radius, evaluating their intensity and - owing to its connection with state-of-the art data processing systems - forecasting such phenomena well in advance.
