Air Berlin Airlines

Air Berlin On 28th April 1979 the first Air Berlin flight took off from Berlin-Tegel to Palma de Mallorca. Germany's favourite holiday island is still the prime destination of Air Berlin's route network. The "Majorca Shuttle" operates daily flights from 12 German airports. The total number of weekly flights to Majorca has increased from 140 (summer 2001) to over 200 (summer 2004).

But Air Berlin also regularly serves all the other major holiday destinations on the Mediterranean coast, as well as in the Canary Islands, Portugal and North Africa.

In the winter of 1998/1999, for instance, the Spanish mainland experienced a renaissance, which is why Alicante, Almeria, Malaga and Jerez de la Frontera have long been an integral part of our flight schedule. The same applies to all the Canary Islands, Greece and its many islands, the south of Italy, Turkey, Faro in Portugal, Madeira, Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt.

In October 2002 Air Berlin launched a new product: the "City Shuttle". It connects some German airports with major European cities: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Budapest, London, Madrid, Manchester, Milan, Rome, Southampton, Vienna and Zurich. In January 2005 the previous product lines were combined to form the “Euro Shuttle”, thereby underlining the airline’s core European competence.

Berlin-Tegel is the home airport of Air Berlin, but it is by no means the only starting point in Germany. Even in the early days the company aimed to provide "blanket coverage" to be closer to its customers. In 1992, when it was still just a holiday airline, Air Berlin took the risk of operating a jet from the airport of Münster/Osnabrück (FMO). The result was that the once sleepy airfield turned into a proper airport - because other airlines followed suit. The early bird still catches the worm though: Air Berlin remains the market leader in Münster/Osnabrück.

Air Berlin was, and still is, the number one holiday airline in Paderborn/Lippstadt, Nuremberg and Dortmund. Passengers from Westphalia no longer have undertake the long journey to Düsseldorf or Hanover - and Franconians don't have to travel to Munich when they want to head for the sun.

Naturally Air Berlin operates in the former East German states as well, with its own bases in Dresden, Erfurt, Leipzig/Halle and Rostock-Laage. Other airports include Altenburg, Berlin-Schönefeld, Bremen, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt/Main, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne/Bonn, Münster/Osnabrück, Nuremberg, Paderborn/Lippstadt and Stuttgart.

The spin-off from the "blanket coverage" policy has also meant that Air Berlin has become one of the major advertising vehicles for the German capital.

The Majorca Shuttle (Euro Shuttle) has become a great success and offers daily flights from Berlin-Tegel, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt/Main, Hamburg, Hanover, Cologne/Bonn, Munich, Münster/Osnabrück, Nuremberg, Paderborn/Lippstadt and Stuttgart. There are also connecting flights from the island to other airports.

The Air Berlin aircraft are replaced regularly - the average age is kept under three years. New and nearly-new aircraft offer many advantages. Our technology is always up to the latest standards and we use the quietest and most economical engines. This enables us to save operating costs and increase our competitiveness, as well as making an effective contribution to environmental protection.

Air Berlin is currently re-equipping from the Boeing 737-400 onto the Type 800 and this is proof of the efficiency of this fleet policy. The new jet has 184 seats, 17 more than its predecessor, its range is 10 percent longer, it flies 10 percent faster – and still saves 10 percent in kerosene.

Because Air Berlin will never allow any compromises in the area of safety either, it arranges for Deutsche Lufthansa to carry out all the major items of regular maintenance work, known in the trades as "checks". Incidentally, Air Berlin was also the first German holiday airline to install, voluntarily, the TCAS anti-collision system in its aircraft.

For your safety. Air Berlin was also the first airline to install winglets to the wings of its 737-800's that enable a faster rate of climb and result in greater fuel efficiency.
